But this shift has left some people behind. Over the past decade, fan and geek culture has moved from the margins to the mainstream as fans have become tastemakers and promotional partners, with fan art transformed into official merchandise and fan fiction launching new franchises. While extreme, these responses are far from unusual, with similar uproars around the female protagonists of the new Star Wars films to full-fledged geek culture wars and harassment campaigns, as exemplified by the #GamerGate controversy that began in 2014. When Ghostbusters returned to the screen in 2016, some male fans of the original film boycotted the all-female adaptation of the cult classic, turning to Twitter to express their disapproval and making it clear that they considered the film’s “real” fans to be white, straight men. I was particularly gratified reading The Midwich Cuckoos when, despite the paucity of my knowledge, I spotted and understood the intertextual allusion the H G Wells’ The War of the Worlds. I’m delighted to say that I’ve enjoyed all of them without exception. Wells – The War of the Worlds, H G Wells – The Invisible Man, John Wyndham – The Chrysalids, John Wyndham – The Day of the Triffids and now John Wyndham – The Midwich Cuckoos. I can still count the number of sci-fi novels I’ve read on one hand. 7/5/2023 0 Comments PjoMost of the fun and quirky memes on Percy Jackson come from these abundant fan pages that are available on the internet. This aspect of narrations relatively appears in films hence making Garcia a formidable author as not many may use this technique in their literature works. Therefore, the narrators pat makes the author to have a glimpse of how it used to be back in the day when Garcia was residing in the USA. The author relies on the accounts of the narrator as the author was in exile that did not interact with Castro’s rule. The family members that plotline focuses on are Pilar, Celia del Pino’s grand daughter, Lourdes and Felicia who are Celia’s daughters. The purpose of using this technique is to illustrate the suffering of the Del Pino family that spreads across the generations. Writing techniques used by GarciaI.RetrospectionAll through the novel, the narrator seems to be giving accounts of events that they might have experienced in the past without interfering with the flow of the story. The novel has a number of themes witnessed all through the plot that vary from memory, living in exile, family ties and political divisions that characterized the Cuban history. One of the key aspects witnessed across the novel is the fact that the narration jumps from one point in time to another hence going contrary to the linear fashion of narration. Ideally, the novel narration in the novel is the third person narration with countable instances written in the first person narration. The novel setting is in between Cuba and the USA where the focus is on a single family of three generations. Richard Attenborough did similar wonders with his Ghandi, in my opinion he does it far more interestingly here. Just as good are Ellen Mirojnick and John Mollo's costumes designs, in fact, Chaplin offers a production so rich that at once i forgot that this was a period film, and felt transported back to the various different time zones the movie had to offer, and this is a good sign of a genius at work. The production design by Stuart Craig is well tuned with the simply fantastic Cinematography by Sven Nykvist, and this is why the movie works so well, because at the more tedious intermissions the movie has to offer, the movie is still interesting and prestine to watch. For starters, the movie is simply beautiful to look at. Perhaps the problem is that, Chaplins life might not be the most suitable for a MOVIE,purely because his life was so eventful, and might have translated itself better as a TV Mini Series, but for getting the best out of what screen time available and still coming up with some very credible work, you must hand it over to Richard Attenborough and everyone at Carolco. Chaplin works on many levels, because on the one hand it packs an entertaining epic in to two hours and thirty minutes, but doesn't fail to keep up your interest and comes over as being very enjoyable. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Demonspawn by Christina EngelaIrritation – the feeling brought about when discussing supernatural events with small-minded people who cannot think past mental blocks rolled in the way by their religious beliefs and the assumption that people who perceive paranormal phenomena are satanists – or that possessing such skills is a manifestation of evil or an obsession with it. Once again, a dress code was sent out to ceremony participants.” The Academy that year, the authors wrote, “wasn’t completely joining the newer generation glamour was too valuable a Hollywood asset to surrender to the latest fashion trends. Smith envisions a sci-fi future sucked clean of any real dangers, contemplates the dark matter that keeps people both close and distant, and revisits the kitschy concepts like “love” and “illness” now relegated to the Museum of Obsolescence. “With allusions to David Bowie and interplanetary travel, Life on Mars imagines a soundtrack for the universe to accompany the discoveries, failures, and oddities of human existence. * A New Yorker, Library Journal and Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year * * A New York Times Notable Book of 2011 and New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice * The necessary condition for the child's playing, in Winnicott's opinion, is the trust in and reliability of external reality experienced as a result of "good-enough mothering" (13). Winnicott, who chose these terms as the title of his 1971 book, defines "playing" as the potential space between the baby and the mother (41), in which, he explains, 'the child gathers objects or phenomena from external reality and uses these in the service of some sample derived from inner or personal reality" (51). In the case of "playing and reality," the two terms that will occupy me here, most theorists, for example, Millar, Huizinga, and Stewart, do not oppose them, but, rather, see playing as one form of reality. Like all abstraction, such dichotomies simplify, reduce, and ignore the multiplicitous and indivisible nature they address and allow us to examine, comprehend, and control that nature. Playing and Reality In Sylvia Cassedy's Novels by Virginia Wolf The dichotomy implied in my title, like all dichotomies, including that of work and play, reflects one means by which we classify and define, that being by opposition. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content: |
